750kg of force has been recorded to go through the lower back of a professional golfer when they swing their driver. This will obviously be less in amateurs, but if you add volume of hitting golf balls, this is a lot of work for the spine.
This alone is a big reason for why the lower back pain is the most common injury for professional and amateur golfers.
Other reasons include:
- A swing technique that creates more side bending of the spine
- A swing technique that creates more arching through the lower back
- A lack of rotation ability in their hips and mid-back
- A lack of strength ability around their hip, trunk (‘core’), and legs muscles
- A spike in playing volume
- A change in equipment
These are all areas we can alter to give your lower back relief, but will need collaboration between the golf physio and teaching professional.
