The rotational and compressive forces in the neck during the golf swing are huge. It’s no wonder that pain is common in the neck for golfers. The biggest cause I see anatomically are golfers being stiff in their mid-back and shoulders, or not strong enough in their neck. Both will place more strain on the neck to withstand the forces of the golf swing
There’s a lot more testing for neck strength going on in professional golf these days, so it’s well worth getting your neck strength tested too!
Easy wins to prevent neck pain
- Avoid too much side-bending of the neck in your swing
- Vary the shot and club selection in your practice
- Work on your mid-spine flexibility and neck strength
