Wrists are the second most injured area in amateur and professional golfers. There’s a huge amount of movement and force that goes through the wrist through the golf swing, particularly at impact, which is the most common time of injury. Changes in playing frequency, changes in swing technique, and hitting more off matts are the most common causes of wrist injury. The lead wrist is injured 67% of the time.
It can be a very frustrating injury for golfers given the reliance on the wrists when we swing, and how much it can impact day-day life as well. With a clear diagnosis, assessment and recovery plan, they usually do really well.
Easy wins to prevent wrist pain:
- Avoid too much flicking or chicken-winging in your swing technique
- Vary the surface your hit balls off – matts and grass
- Work on your grip strength, arm strength, mid-back mobility and leg strength
